Claussen-Simon-Kompositionspreis 2025

In 2025, the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung will award the Claussen-Simon Composition Prize for the third time, in cooperation with the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. Endowed with €15,000, the prize takes the form of a commission for a large-scale orchestral work to be composed by an emerging composer (age limit: 35 years). The world premiere is scheduled for February 2027 as part of the “Elbphilharmonie Visions” festival.

The aim of the Composition Prize is to enable a young composer to premiere an ambitious orchestral work in an outstanding musical context, while also offering conceptual and organizational support throughout the composition process. Through the collaboration of these three renowned institutions, the prize recipient receives substantial support, gains valuable experience, and benefits from targeted guidance on the path toward professional establishment as a composer. Central to the program is direct exchange with key representatives of the orchestra, concert hall, and foundation.

Alex Paxton ist Träger des Claussen-Simon-Kompositionspreises 2023

The 2023 Claussen-Simon Composition Prize has been awarded to Alex Paxton. A new orchestral work by the British composer premiered in spring 2025 as part of the “Elbphilharmonie Visions” festival, performed by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under the direction of Alan Gilbert.

A distinguished jury chaired by Alan Gilbert selected the winner from a pool of 150 anonymously submitted sketches. Following an initial pre-selection, four finalists were invited to a reading session during which they had the opportunity to work with the orchestra. The final decision was made based on this live collaboration. In addition to prizewinner Alex Paxton, the invited finalists were composers Reika Hattori, Hristina Šušak, and Tomoya Yokokawa.

The jury particularly praised Paxton’s distinctive and vividly colorful compositional voice, which stands out clearly from other aesthetic currents in contemporary music. Among the jury members was Swedish composer Lisa Streich, the first recipient of the Claussen-Simon Composition Prize, whose work "Flügel" was enthusiastically received by both audience and critics at this year’s edition of “Elbphilharmonie Visions.”

Additional members of the jury included composers Matthias Pintscher, Prof. Dr. Reinhard Flender, and Prof. Fredrik Schwenk from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg.

I am deeply honored to receive the inaugural Claussen-Simon Composition Prize and to write a new work for large orchestra, for Alan Gilbert, and for this hall. Hamburg is my German home. It was here, in my youth, that my musical biography began. To return to this place with music—where my love for it first took root, the cradle of all my musical thoughts—is profoundly moving.

I have long been fascinated by Alan Gilbert’s sound, which I first experienced live in Lucerne in 2016. To my ears, it has a very special, grounded color. I am curious to discover whether—and how—I will be able to inscribe that quality, along with the sonic character of the hall, into the piece I compose. I am sincerely grateful to the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung for entrusting me with this fascinating task.

I am truly delighted that the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung has established this new composition prize, as it is a perfect complement to our new festival Elbphilharmonie Visions. It offers a direct and tangible form of support for contemporary music by ensuring that the winning work will be performed in a prominent setting—namely, in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie, a space that seems tailor-made for new music.

A particularly vital aspect of our celebration of the contemporary music world is the recognition and support of outstanding composers of the new generation. The Claussen-Simon-Stiftung’s initiative to establish a composition prize in connection with the new Elbphilharmonie Visions festival is of immense importance in advancing this goal.
